26. Jerome’s first memory of the river

I remember when I first joined Barking and Dagenham I was taken on a tour of Eastbrookend Country Park and The Chase Nature Reserve. It was a sunny day in late Summer and the place was full of colour. I was already about an hour into the walk and we came across the River Rom. The gentle sound of the water flowing took over any other sound or sight that I was experiencing at that moment in time. I had to sit down and take stock of it all to be fully immersed in my surroundings. The path by the River Rom provides such a calming and reflective walk, the river is vital for a range of wildlife and if you are quiet and focused enough, you might even spot a kingfisher darting across the water. We work hard as a Ranger Service to maintain the quality of the river and the path running alongside it. From large scale projects alongside the Land of the Fanns, Thames 21, Environment Agency and Thames Chase, to smaller scale projects with our volunteers, we focus on the river to benefit both those who visit it and those who call it home.
